In the first hour, learn the tips and tools you’ll need to succeed as a summer associate at a small or large firm. Stop by and meet the CSO staff to learn more about what the CSO has to offer including how to find a summer job and prepare for Fall OCI and summer job fairs. The student-run Action Committee for Career Services (ACCS) will be taking confidential feedback, providing one-on-one peer advice about OCI and job fairs, and conducting tours of the Interview Suite so you know what to expect during Fall OCI.

Fifty years after the Supreme Court’s landmark decisions on school prayer, many public schools around the country still struggle to honor their basic First Amendment duties.

Daniel Mach, Director of the ACLU Program on Freedom of Religion and Belief, will discuss some of the recurring problems and recent conflicts – including proselytizing school assemblies, sectarian Bible curricula, restrictive student dress codes, and more.

This is the second of two mandatory meetings for 2Ls and 3Ls who will be applying for judicial clerkships. UT Law Judicial Clerkship Advisors will discuss the clerkship application process in detail including summer deadlines and the two online systems students will be using to apply for clerkships.

The program starts by discussing the difference between trademarks, copyrights, and patents, as well as domain names and business name registrations.

It then explains, once it is established that trademark protection is appropriate, the importance of selecting a strong mark, that is, one that is both federally registrable and legally protectable. It highlights factors important when choosing a mark, such as the possibility of a likelihood of confusion, and explains the importance of doing a complete search and whether an attorney should be used. It identifies other potential grounds for the USPTO to refuse registration.

Finally, it establishes what may happen if another trademark owner believes it has stronger rights in a mark and issues a “cease-and-desist” letter. It concludes with information on how to find an attorney and the distinction between what the USPTO does in the federal registration process and what a private attorney could do, and how to avoid "scams" perpetrated by companies that request fees for services not required by the USPTO.

Panelists include Judge Catharina Haynes, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit; Judge Rodney Gilstrap, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas; Judge Craig Gargotta, U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Texas; and Magistrate Judge David Counts, U.S. Magistrate Court for the Northern District of Texas. Moderated by Dean Stefanie Lindquist. The Clerkship Advisors encourage 2Ls and 3Ls applying for judicial clerkships this year and 1Ls hoping to apply next summer to attend this panel.
