    Advanced Training for Mediators

    This two day, highly interactive training will provide mediators with the additional knowledge and skills to resolve the most difficult conflicts. Despite best efforts in mediation, parties and their lawyers often ‘get stuck’. This course will provide you with new perspectives and techniques which will increase your effectiveness as a mediator and enhance your practice.

    What you will learn:

    •Cognitive barriers which impede settlement •Dealing with highly emotional and difficult people and how to convert them to friends of the process •How to rewire destructive negotiations and get them back on a forward track •Specific techniques to maximize the efficiency and productivity of the joint session •Ways to improve the use of private sessions and caucusing •Methods to increase value and impact of pre-mediation preparations •Effective post mediation practices

    Akin Gump Pro Bono Info Session

    Steven Schulman, Pro Bono Partner at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP (Washington, DC) will discuss law firm pro bono programs and Akin Gump’s Pro Bono Scholars Program. The Pro Bono Scholars Program is a two-year program for outstanding law students who want to make pro bono work an important part of their law firm careers. This program allows students to gain valuable work experience with both pro bono and commercial clients. During the first summer, scholars receive a $20,000 stipend while spending at least seven weeks at a public interest organization of their choice, and three weeks at an Akin Gump office (Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York or Washington, D.C.) assisting with pro bono cases and being paid a summer associate salary. During the second summer, the Pro Bono Scholars are part of the firm’s summer associate program, which will include a commercial workload as well as pro bono opportunities. The Pro Bono Scholars Program will take place in our Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York and Washington, D.C. offices.     On Friday, February 1, Heather Jarvis will be speaking about "Public Service Loan Forgiveness in Five Easy Steps" during lunch from noon-1:15 p.m. as part of the Public Service Career Fair.     Andrés Jana is the partner in charge of the International Arbitration Group at Bofill Mir & Alvarez, Santiago, Chile. He is the Chilean delegate before the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law, UNCITRAL and is a member of the Working Group on Arbitration Involving States or State Entities of the ICC’s Arbitration Committee. Andrés Jana has an extensive practice in commercial and investment arbitration and was appointed by the Chilean government as a member of the list of ICSID arbitrators.
