The Akin Gump Summer Pro Bono Scholars Program provides top first-year law students interested in law firm practice the opportunity to develop an early expertise in public interest law. The skills acquired during this program build a foundation for pro bono work and billable practice that will serve participants throughout their careers. The program spans two summers, with the Pro Bono Scholars working both at the firm and at a public interest organization during the first summer as rising 2Ls. The next summer as a rising 3L, the Pro Bono Scholars join the firm as participants in the firm’s general summer associate program. In 2016, the Pro Bono Scholars Program will be offered in our Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, and Washington, D.C. offices. Thanks to Akin Gump, I had the unique opportunity to work for a large law firm, perform public interest work and work in-house directly under the General Counsel at a great organization. All in one summer! In my time at the firm’s Houston office, I was immersed in a variety of pro bono projects with a family of attorneys whose shared enthusiasm for pro bono work is unparalleled. Next, at the KIPP Foundation in San Francisco, I was able to pursue my interest in narrowing the education gap nationwide while working directly with the General Counsel. My work was hands on, substantive, and extremely gratifying. Akin Gump’s extensive pro bono connections introduced me to an organization that I will be closely involved with for the entirety of my legal career. My summer with Akin Gump dramatically exceeded my expectations and the legal experience I received was unmatched by any other summer program. I cannot wait to return to Akin Gump next year.

The Texas Law Review at the University of Texas in Austin will be hosting a symposium January 28–30, 2016, Thursday evening to Saturday luncheon, tentatively titled “The Constitution and Economic Inequality.” While the general topic of economic inequality has recently attracted a huge wave of popular and scholarly attention, legal scholars are only now beginning to explore the problem’s constitutional dimensions. This Symposium will change that. We will examine the emerging, many-sided problem of economic inequality in constitutional theory, history, and political economy.

The Texas Law Review is working with Professors Joseph Fishkin and William Forbath to design this event, which will bring together a high-powered group of legal scholars, historians, and other academics to focus on the relationship between the Constitution and our political economy, including arguments that the Constitution depends on preventing oligarchy and preserving a broad, accessible middle class. We are inviting scholars to think about inequality and unequal opportunity in a variety of substantive areas. The proceedings of the symposium will be published in the Texas Law Review.

Hina Jilani is a prominent human rights lawyer and activist and Advocate for the Supreme Court of Pakistan. She will present a talk entitled "Rights, Conflict and Crises." The event is co-sponsored with the Wilson Chair in Pakistan Studies at UT Austin.

Hina Jilani is a prominent lawyer and has been a civil society activist in Pakistan for the past three decades. She founded the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and is an Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. She served as a UN Special Representative on Human Rights Defenders from 2000 to 2008, and most recently served as a member of the United Nations Fact Finding Mission on Gaza in 2009. Over her long and impressive career as an activist, Jilani established Pakistan’s first all-women’s law firm in 1980, Pakistan’s first legal aid center in 1986, and Dastak – a housing facility for women who are targets of honor killings. She has conducted many landmark cases setting new standards for human rights in Pakistan, focusing particularly on the most vulnerable populations in society including women, minorities, children, and prisoners. She has repeatedly called for the democratization of the political system in Pakistan and amendments to the Constitution to increase the representation of women in its legislature. Jilani’s work has made her a target of hostile propaganda, arrests, and abuse. Despite this, she continues to live in Lahore and pursue her work. Her publications include Human Rights and Democratic Development in Pakistan (1998) and Hadood Laws: A Divine Sanction? (1988). She was awarded the Millennium Peace Prize for Women in 2001 in recognition of her life-long contribution to peace-building and human rights. In 2013, The Elders – a group of independent leaders working for peace, justice, and human rights founded by Nelson Mandela – appointed Jilani as an Elder.

Mr. Adegbile served as senior counsel for the Senate Judiciary Committee and spent more than a decade working for the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. Now a partner at WilmerHale in New York, Mr. Adegbile argued before the Supreme Court in Shelby County and Northwest Austin Municipal Utility District Number One.

Madhu Chugh, counsel at WilmerHale in DC, served as the director of health care policy for the Kerry–Edwards campaign and worked on healthcare policy for Senator Edward Kennedy. She is an alumna of The University of Texas and a recipient of the 2013 Outstanding Young Texas Ex Award.

This workshop will provide a basic understanding of video advocacy and the WITNESS methodology, including how to make initial decisions about the strategic use of video within your legal campaigns such as a video’s goal, message, audience, story and distribution. Through case studies from around the world, practical exercises and discussions, participants will learn: Emerging trends and precedent in using video in the courtroom to fight for justice and accountability. How video can fill an attorney’s evidence “to do” list: Strategies for developing advocacy plans built around visual evidence, testimony and stories, and for using video to target domestic and international institutions including the state and national government, UN and regional commissions, other governmental decision-makers, the media, and allied organizations Tools and networks to facilitate the capturing, management and sharing of videos with enhanced evidentiary value for effective use in accountability processes. Video advocacy uses one of our greatest strengths—our stories—to help overcome resource and political obstacles. In particular, video from the frontlines can be invaluable for criminal investigations and court proceedings. In many situations, eyewitnesses and on-the-ground human rights activists are better positioned to collect evidence of human rights abuses than professional investigators because investigators often arrive after-the-fact when the violence has stopped and the evidence has deteriorated or is gone. However, while citizen shot video often provides helpful clues about what took place and who might be responsible, the quality seldom passes the higher bar needed to be used as evidence in a court of law. With slight modifications, the footage frontline documenters often risk their lives to capture can – in addition to exposing injustice and supporting advocacy efforts – serve as evidence in criminal and civil justice processes. Human rights advocates can also employ new tactics and techniques to incorporate video and other media into their work.

1L and 2L students interested in criminal law can join the Journal without completing the write-on process. Submit a resume (with grades, if available) and a statement of interest (500 word max) to Managing.AJCL@gmail.com by 2:00 PM on Friday 2/5. Students who receive a grade of of an 'A' or above in criminal will gain acceptance through the course grade alone. By joining AJCL, members will have access to leaders in the criminal law field through brown-bag lunches with practitioners and professional development panels. This year we've spoken to DAs from the Travis County DA's office, federal public defenders, some of the top criminal defense attorneys in Austin, and federal prosecutors, including the head of the Criminal Division from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas. Members will also have the opportunity to attend to our symposium, "The Frontiers of Cybersecurity and Law," featuring speakers from the DOJ, FBI, academia, and the private sector. The symposium runs from 2/4 to 2/6. Symposium seating is restricted to AJCL members due to strong demand. More information about the symposium can be found on the AJCL website, AJCLonline.org.

The 5th Annual Texas Law Professional Development Institute: Prepared For Practice is taught by industry experts and practicing attorneys, covering facets of new attorney professionalism most sought after by legal employers. It is promoted widely to employers, many of whom contributed to the content of the program.

Whether you’re a 1L preparing for your first summer clerkship or the fall recruiting season, a 2L working to turn your summer clerkship or fellowship into an offer, or a graduating 3L getting a head start on your legal career, the Texas Law Professional Development Institute (PDI) will help you be a more competitive candidate and a better lawyer.
