Do we pay enough attention to state constitutional provisions that protect individual rights? State and federal courts often focus on the U.S. Constitution and ignore state constitutions. In a fascinating new book, 51 Imperfect Solutions, Judge Jeffrey Sutton of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit argues that state and federal courts should give far more attention to state constitutional provisions than they often do. Judge Sutton, Chief Judge Lee Rosenthal (S.D. Tex.) and Professor Sandy Levinson will discuss the book in a mini-symposium during the lunch hour on February 4th.

Mark will discuss immigrants and public benefits, other developments in immigration policies, and advocating for immigrants and low-income groups as a career path. Mark worked for many years at the Administration for Children and Families in the U.S. Department for Health and Human Services, which has responsibility for refugee resettlement and the unaccompanied children program. He also served as the executive director of the Georgetown Center on Poverty, Inequality, and Public Policy, and began his career as a legal services lawyer for ten years. From 2009-17, Mr. Greenberg worked at the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. ACF includes the Office of Refugee Resettlement, which has responsibility for the refugee resettlement and unaccompanied children program, and has a strong research agenda relating to the programs under its jurisdiction. Among these are a wide range of human services programs, including Head Start, child care, child support, child welfare, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.

The Texas Journal of Oil, Gas, and Energy will host the 15th annual TJOGEL Symposium on February 20th and 21st. TJOGEL is the largest student-run publication focusing on energy law scholarship in the United States and the Symposium is our premier event, bringing together legal practitioners from across the state and country to discuss the latest developments in the world of oil, gas, and energy law.

Join TMLS for its academic symposium on Friday, February 21, 2020. This year’s topic is “The Case for Reparations in the United States”. Scholars and academics in the field of reparations will discuss the legal and moral justifications for reparations from 10-11am. From 11-12pm, our panelists will discuss the practicalities of implementing a system of reparations in the United States today. We will break for lunch from 12-1pm. Our keynote speaker will then address current attempts to pass reparations laws in this country.

Getting Radical in the South (GRITS) is an annual multi-day conference that brings together members of the entire University of Texas community, students throughout the South, and professionals working in advocacy spaces. Our conference is intended to foster an environment on the University of Texas campus, specifically within Texas Law, that explores and promotes radical advocacy in the South. The conference consists of various speakers and workshops that are aimed at helping students around the country learn about various social justice issues affecting the South, while also equipping them with the tools and skills that will help them to become more impactful advocates. In Spring of 2020, the conference will have several individual speakers and panels discussing topics such as sex work, unions, criminal justice, and more. Overall, the event will be an opportunity for students across UT and across the South to learn what legal social justice advocacy means and how they can be the most effective community lawyers.
