The Center will host a conversation with Krisi Kastl, founder and CEO of Kastl Law, P.C., accomplished trial lawyer, and former President of the Dallas Bar Association. Join us to hear career insights and lessons learned from a nationally recognized trial lawyer who built a successful law firm, tried nearly 100 cases to jury verdict and has dedicated her career to advocacy, professional leadership, mentorship and community service. In the Supreme Court’s recent Trump v Barbara opinion on birthright citizenship, Justice Alito’s asserted in his dissent that before and soon after the Civil War “immigration was unrestricted, so aliens could come and stay as long as they wanted.” Historical evidence does not confirm his claim. Though there were few federal laws in that period, a phalanx of state-level laws restricted the international and interstate migration of free and enslaved Black people and indigent migrants. Professor Anna Law, a scholar of US immigration and constitutional history, is the author of a timely new book that addresses these subjects.

Started by students in 2013, Change It Up! is Texas Law’s annual public-interest orientation. The signature event welcomes new students into Texas Law’s vibrant public interest community.

Whether you’re already committed to public interest law or just beginning to explore your options, Change It Up! is an opportunity to meet classmates, connect with mentors, and discover the many ways lawyers use their legal careers to make a difference.

The afternoon includes lunch, an alumni panel discussion, and Community Connections, small-group conversations with faculty, staff, alumni, and attorneys working across public interest law. You’ll have the opportunity to explore different career paths, ask candid questions, and begin building relationships within Texas Law’s public interest community.

Alumni Awards is a signature event of the Texas Law Alumni Association, celebrating graduates whose careers, leadership, and service exemplify the very best of our community. The 2026 celebration will take place Friday, September 18, with dinner and an awards ceremony recognizing the Outstanding Young Alum, Distinguished Alum for Community Service, Outstanding Alum, and Lifetime Achievement honorees. Join the Strauss Center for International Security and Law and the Clements Center for National Security on Tuesday, September 22, for “The Law of the Sea Treaty at Risk,” with former Secretary of the Navy Donald Winter. The Law of the Sea Treaty was the product of the third UN convention on law of the sea held from 1973 to 1982 with more than 160 states participating. Currently, however, many states, including the US and Iran, still have not ratified the treaty. Furthermore, some states that have ratified the treaty, such as the PRC, blatantly ignore treaty provisions. At a time when maritime commerce represents over 80% of world trade, can the international community let this treaty effectively become irrelevant? Join Secretary Winter as he answers these questions. Lunch will be served.

Biography Dr. Donald C. Winter is an independent consultant supporting national and international security interests in the US and allied nations. He served as the 74th Secretary of the Navy from January 2006 to March 2009. As Secretary of the Navy, he led America’s Navy and Marine Corps Team and was responsible for an annual budget of over $125 billion and almost 900,000 people. Dr. Winter’s prior business career in the aerospace and defense industry spanned over 30 years as a systems engineer, program manager and corporate executive.

From 2009 to 2020, he was a Professor of Practice at the University of Michigan where he taught graduate level courses on systems engineering, satellite design, and maritime policy. He was reappointed to this role in 2024. Since 2011 he has served in multiple roles assisting the Commonwealth of Australia in their efforts to reconstruct the Royal Australian Navy’s fleet and establish a sustainable shipbuilding capability. During 2019 to 2021 he also served as the US DoD’s Senior Defense Industry Advisor for Ukraine. Dr. Winter was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE) in 2002 and served as its chair from 2020 to 2024.

There will be two preliminary rounds after which the top 4 teams will advance to the semifinals the following week.
