  7. 11:50am 2026-10-29T12:50-05:00
    Guns, Cities, and the Constitution

When the Supreme Court decides a Second Amendment case, it looks to the nation’s “history and tradition.” But whose history? Much of the story of gun rights and regulation was written not in Congress or state capitols, but in city councils and town halls, and those records are scattered, incomplete, and easy to overlook.

Join us for lunch as Patrick J. Charles, Senior Historian for United States Special Operations Command, presents "The History and Tradition of Firearm Localism," co-authored with Professor Joseph Blocher and forthcoming in the Texas Law Review. Charles’s work has been cited by the Supreme Court of the United States and six federal circuits.

Hosted by the Texas Law Review.

    Revisiting NYT v. Sullivan

Holloway argues that the Supreme Court’s actual-malice standard lacks a sound basis in the original meaning of the First Amendment and the Anglo-American tradition of defamation law. The discussion will examine whether Sullivan’s protections for the press and public figures remain constitutionally justified and how the law should balance free speech against the right to protect one’s reputation. Chick-fil-A provided!
