The two-day celebration will honor Farenthold’s remarkable legacy of leadership and advocacy for reproductive justice, peace, and environmental justice. In the wake of the Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, the United States possesses a fragmented patchwork of state laws imposing varying degrees of restrictions on and penalties for abortion. This talk will examine the profound implications of this arrangement for noncitizen women, whose rights and mobility are already constrained by federal immigration laws and policies. It will argue that the intersection of state-level abortion restrictions and federal immigration enforcement creates de facto internal borders, uniquely curtailing the reproductive freedoms of noncitizens.

As the rivalry between the United States and China intensifies, the US industrial base is emerging as a game-changing instrument of national power, fueling an intense industrial base mobilization contest between the two great powers. Lee, a leading expert in defense policy, will reveal how new technologies and shifting geopolitics are transforming the way America prepares for and deters global threats. Drawing on lessons from Ukraine and other recent conflicts, this talk will show why the ability to scale up production and innovation is now the ultimate US advantage. Biography Caitlin Lee, Ph.D., is the director of Acquisition and Technology Policy in the National Security Research Division at RAND, where she oversees the RAND’s research for the Pentagon related to US-China competition, emerging technology, defense industrial base issues, and acquisition. In her research role as a senior political scientist, she is currently leading projects focused on US and Chinese defense mobilization trends and implications, and US efforts to build resilience in the industrial base to deter great power war. She has testified before the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, published on military innovation and drone warfare in the Journal of Strategic Studies, Air and Space Power Journal, and other academic and popular outlets, and has authored or co-authored RAND studies on a variety of aerospace, force design, and technology topics including RAND’s Thinking Through Protracted War with China. She previously founded the Mitchell Institute’s Center for UAV and Autonomy Studies and served as the senior aviation reporter for the America’s Bureau of Jane’s for over a decade. She teaches Planning US Military Forces at Georgetown University’s Security Studies Program and holds a Ph.D. in War Studies from King’s College London.

Join the Probate, Guardianship Law, Estates & Trusts Society (PGLETS) for lunch and conversation about "When Life Happens," an engaging and informative introduction to probate and guardianship law. Over lunch, students will hear from Texas Law alumni whose experiences provide distinct perspectives on these practice areas. Rather than beginning with the code, the conversation will begin with the real-life events that trigger probate and guardianship law and explore how attorneys and courts help individuals and families navigate what happens next. We are excited to welcome Emma Jane Hopper ’25, Associate Attorney with the fiduciary litigation team at Osborne, Helman, Scott, Knisely & Stanton, LLP. A graduate of the Texas Law, Emma focuses her practice on matters involving trusts, probate, guardianship, and fiduciary litigation. During her time at Texas Law, Emma founded PGLETS and developed several probate and guardianship related pro bono initiatives through the Mithoff Pro Bono Program, including wills clinics, alternatives-to-guardianship clinics, and a court visitor program in partnership with the Travis County Probate Courts. Her work earned her recognition as a National Jurist Law Student of the Year and the Texas Access to Justice Commission’s Law Student Pro Bono Award.

Joining will be Nolan Bedward ’22, an Associate Attorney at Savrick Schumann Johnson McGarr Kaminski & Shirley, LLP and graduate of the Texas Law. Nolan brings a unique perspective shaped by experience both inside the probate court system and in private practice. He previously served as a Law Clerk and Staff Attorney with the Travis County Probate Court, gaining firsthand experience with probate and guardianship matters and the procedures through which they move through the court. Nolan later practiced at Jackson Walker before joining Savrick Schumann, where he continues his practice as a litigation attorney. His experience across the court, Big Law, and private litigation practice provides students with insight into both the substantive work of probate and the different career paths through which attorneys can encounter these areas of law.

We are also excited to welcome Kit Matthews ’26, an Associate in the Private Wealth Management group at Troutman Pepper Locke and a graduate of Texas Law. During her time at Texas Law, Kit served as President of PGLETS, helping lead the organization and connect students with opportunities to learn more about probate. Now practicing in private wealth management, Kit will offer students the perspective of a recent Texas Law graduate beginning her career in the trusts and estates field and insight into the transactional and planning side of this practice area.

Join Katie Harbath, founder and CEO of Anchor Change and former Facebook public policy director, for a private coffee and conversation about technology, democracy, elections, and public policy. Drawing on her decade leading Facebook’s global elections team, Harbath will discuss the challenges and opportunities at the intersection of technology and democratic institutions, as well as career pathways in tech policy, government, and civic technology. The conversation will feature her forthcoming book, Disrupting Politics: A Front Row Seat to the Collision of Technology and Democracy, which offers a firsthand account of the defining moments that reshaped the relationship between technology and politics.

Biography: Katie Harbath is a nonresident senior fellow with the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab and a global leader at the intersection of elections, democracy, civic, and tech. She is the founder and CEO of Anchor Change – a civic tech strategies firm focused on developing solutions at the intersection of tech, policy, and business focusing on global issues related to democracy, elections, and civic engagement online.

Prior to starting her own firm, she was a public policy director at Facebook where, over the course of ten years, she was credited with building out and leading a 30-person global team responsible for managing elections. She also played a significant role in building another team of over 30 people that work to get governments and elected officials around the world – at the local, regional, and national levels – to use Facebook and Instagram as a way to connect and engage with constituents.

Azadeh is the Legal and Advocacy Director at Project South, where she leads work focused on immigrant rights and racial justice. Before joining Project South, she spent approximately a decade as an immigrants’ rights attorney with the ACLU of Georgia and the ACLU of North Carolina. A past president of the National Lawyers Guild, Azadeh currently serves on the Advisory Council of the American Association of Jurists. She has authored or edited numerous human rights reports, law review articles, and book chapters addressing movement lawyering, immigrants’ rights, the surveillance of Muslim Americans, and the use of international human rights frameworks as tools for liberation.

Faulty forensic evidence and biased evidence relying on sex-based stereotypes have long been used to convict innocent women in situations where an accident or health event has been misconstrued as a criminal act. This talk will conceptualize and consider “reproductive wrongful convictions,” which are instances in which a noncriminal pregnancy-related event or act––such as a miscarriage, stillbirth, or taking legally prescribed medicine––is erroneously labeled as criminal. It will also attend to the ways that women with disabilities and from racially and economically subordinated communities are often labeled as “unfit” and made particularly vulnerable to these charges.

Castles on Sand: Tenure Protections Against For Cause Termination

Tenure is central to academic freedom and the university’s role as a place for truth-seeking and knowledge. But how well does tenure actually protect faculty? Drawing on an original dataset of for-cause termination policies from more than 400 institutions, Jocelyn Wilson joins us to examine the troubling gaps in protections for tenured faculty, including broad grounds for termination, weak safeguards for academic freedom and speech, and expanding post-tenure review practices. She also offers insights on the potential role of courts, administrators, and the public to strengthen the foundations of faculty rights, and thereby safeguard the the university's role as a place for truth-seeking and knowledge.

Body doubling is a study technique where you work alongside someone to increase focus and help reduce procrastination. The presence of others can enhance cognitive performance and productivity, especially for those who struggle with attention and executive functioning. We provide structured time allotments for studying and wellness breaks (and food, of course).  

This is a great opportunity to set study goals, monitor your progress, and enjoy extra productive study time (and snacks).

The CSO hosts a public-sector Mock Interview Program (government, public interest, and public defense) each year to introduce 1Ls to the legal interviewing process. It also affords attorneys an opportunity to meet our exceptional students. Depending on availability, 2L and 3Ls may also participate in this program.

Practice interviews and attorney feedback are invaluable to our students, preparing them technically and instilling confidence as they embark on their 1L interview season.

Each mock interview will be 20 minutes in length followed by a 10-minute review session for feedback.
