    Shackled During Labor & Delivery

    Come join Texas Law Students for Reproductive Justice and the American Constitution Society for "Shackling During Labor & Delivery: Practice, Policy, and Texas Prisoners' Reproductive Rights." We'll be hosting Michelle Smith of the Texas Civil Rights Project; Diana Claitor of the Texas Jail Project; and Andrea Bos, our own UT Law student to discuss the history, use, constitutionality of such practices in Texas.     Careers in International Law

    The International Law Section of the State Bar of Texas will be presenting a panel of top lawyers from the major law firms and energy companies in Texas who practice international law in a variety of settings. Come learn about the different paths each of the practitioners took out of law school to become international lawyers, what their practice is like, and the pros and cons of practicing international law. Panelists include Martin Lutz ‘89, ILS Council Member and partner, DuBois, Bryant & Campbell, L.L.P.; Joe Fuqua, Senior Corporate Counsel, ARM; Arcie Jordan ‘79, partner, Jackson Walker LLP ( Austin); Peter Ruggero, partner, Ruggero Law Firm PC; and George Humphrey, ILS Council Member and partner, Andrews Kurth LLP (Houston).

    In addition, students may be interested in the Section’s Texas Law Student Legal Writing Contest (papers due May 31, 2012) as well as their Annual International Law Institute, which takes place March 29-30, 2012 in Houston.

    Texas Abortion Sonogram Law's Effects

    In February, The Texas Abortion Sonogram Law went into effect. This law requires a woman seeking an abortion to first get an ultrasound, and then be shown the ultrasound image and listen to her doctor describe the image in detail. Please join us to learn about the legal and medical effects of this highly controversial law.

    Mr. Blake Rocap, Legislative Council for NARAL Pro-Choice Texas, will discuss the legal aspects of the bill. Joining him, Dr. Scott Spear, Medical Director of Planned Parenthood - Texas Capital Region, will discuss its medical implications.

    Event hosted by the Health Law and Bioethics Society, American Constitution Society, and the Texas Law Students for Reproductive Justice. Pizza and soft drinks will be provided.

    UTLaw LRAP Info Session

    Are you considering opportunities in government service or public interest law? The UT Law Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP), administered by the William Wayne Justice Center for Public Interest Law, provides financial assistance to graduates with educational debt who enter qualifying public service. The UT Law LRAP, coupled with the new federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness and Income Based Repayment programs, will significantly help graduates in public service repay their educational debt.

    Prosecutorial Oversight Tour

    The Prosecutorial Oversight Campaign is a national tour to initiate dialogue and seek answers to these questions: • What are the systems we rely upon to ensure prosecutorial accountability? • What does research-based evidence tell us about how well those systems are working? • What improvements should be made to these systems to ensure quality and accountability?

    The Austin, Texas event will be a public discussion of these issues, with a prosecutor, a jurist, a legal ethicist, and a representative of the Texas bar disciplinary committee.

    Reminder for 3Ls planning to sit for the Texas July 2012 Bar Exam: in order to sit for the exam, your In-State Application to Take the TX Bar Exam must be post-marked by March 30, 2012. This deadline is strictly enforced.

    Applicants who have not yet filed their Declaration of Intention to Study Law must do so prior to or with their In-State Application.

    Texas State Courts Workshop

    A panel of judges from various Texas state courts will discuss judicial clerkships at their courts and what students can do to make themselves competitive clerkship candidates. Panelists include Justice Debra Lehrmann ‘82, Supreme Court of Texas; Justice Michael Massengale ‘97, First Court of Appeals; Justice Rebecca Simmons, Fourth Court of Appeals; and Judge Cheryl Johnson, Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. Moderated by Elana Einhorn, Judicial Clerkship Advisor.     Scott McCown: School Finance Litigation

    More than half of Texas school districts are part of pending lawsuits against the state’s school finance system. Join us as Scott McCown, ‘79, talks about the lawsuits, the historic conflict between rich and poor school districts in Texas, and how the current lawsuits could impact educational equity. As a state district judge, McCown presided over all public school finance cases from 1990-2002. He is now Executive Director of the Center for Public Policy Priorities. Norma Cantu, who holds joint appointments at UT in the College of Education and School of Law, will moderate the discussion. Professor Cantu is a former Assistant Secretary of Education for Civil Rights and former regional counsel and education director of the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

    1.5 Hours of CLE available. Lunch provided.

    ACS Hosts Texas Redistricting Panel

    Join ACS for a panel on the ongoing Texas redistricting litigation by attorneys working on this litigation. The Panel will be moderated by Professor Fishkin and will address minority voting interests, the Voting Rights Act, and the current state of the litigation.
