    The Abuse Survivors Assistance Program will be selling tickets for the annual Pumpkins & Poker tournament in the Tom Clark Lounge or the Atrium every day starting Wednesday, Oct. 2nd until Thursday, Oct. 10th from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm.

    A $15 ticket ($20 at the door) gets you into the raffle for a bunch of awesome prizes, a free t-shirt, a free drink ticket, and a bag of chips to play your poker heart out. Non-players get a raffle ticket and a t-shirt or drink ticket for only $10 ($12 at the door).

    (Program is at 1:10-2:10 p.m.) Learn about careers in indigent defense from UT Law alumni serving as public defenders. Panelists will discuss their careers and offer advice on how to land a job as a public defender. Panelists include Genesis Draper ’06, Assistant Federal Public Defender, Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Southern District of Texas (Houston) and formerly the Assistant Public Defender, Office of the Metropolitan Public Defender (Nashville, TN), and Aron Israelite ’09, Trial Attorney, Federal Defenders of San Diego Inc.     Applying for Judicial Clerkships (Pt. I)

    This is the first of a series of meetings for 2Ls and 3Ls who will be applying for 2015-term clerkships. This meeting is geared towards students who will be applying for the most competitive appellate court clerkships, and will focus on preparation for a January/February application period. UT Law Judicial Clerkship Advisors will discuss how to determine what courts you are competitive for, how to select judges, and how and when to apply for clerkships.     Jane's Due Process Training

    Tina Hester, executive director of Jane's Due Process, will be holding a hotline volunteer training on Tuesday, October 8. JDP provides legal services for pregnant teens in the state of Texas ranging from judicial bypasses to protection of educational rights. Hotline volunteers will do client intake to screen for legal referrals to JDP's network of volunteer attorneys.     PILA Potluck

    Join us Tuesday, October 8th at 7:00PM for PILA’s first Potluck of the semester. We will hear from representatives from other public interest student organizations, the William Wayne Justice Center for Public Interest Law, and the Pro Bono Program. We will also have a panel of recent UT Law grads who have turned their passion for helping people into successful legal careers.

    There is no better way to get plugged in to the public interest community than to attend PILA Potlucks!

    PILA will provide the main meal and drinks, but feel free to bring additional side dishes or desserts.

    Military Strategy and the Courtroom

    Join the Texas Board of Advocates for insight into how battle-tested military strategies can be applied to litigation.

    Lt. Colonel Dreier has a military career spanning from operations Classic Resolve and Earnest Will during the Cold War (in which he served as an intelligence analyst), through the wars in Afghanistan (where he served as a strategic policy planner) and Iraq (working on reconstruction of judicial and executive functions in Wasit Province, Iraq). He additionally served with both the Marine Corps Embassy Security Group (Department of State), and the Marine Corps Special Operations Command before entering the Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps of the U.S. Army at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He has handled over three hundred cases and been sole or lead counsel in thirty-three contested trials, of which he has won thirty.

    The presentation draws parallels between operational military planning and trial, and highlights how these planning techniques can form effective trial strategies. The presentation covers military science, psychology, and game theory.
