Interested in starting your own law firm and access to justice--come learn about the Texas Opportunity and Justice Incubator (TOJI). TOJI provides office space and training for a select group of new attorneys who want to build their own practices. During their 18-month participation in the incubator, these attorneys agree to represent low- and modest-income clients while receiving mentorship and training in how to run a law office with a focus on technology.

This training is designed to acclimate students to the specific format needed to write bar essays. In each session, students will write a practice essay (no background substantive knowledge required) and will receive feedback before the next session.

Students will help Medicaid recipients obtain medically-necessary treatment through the fair hearing administrative process. The project involves two workshops, and student volunteers must attend both workshops. In the first workshop, students will review evidence packets and interview clients and/or their families, then prepare an evidence index for their reviewed case. In the second workshop, students will draft letters of medical necessity. Disability Rights Texas attorneys and pro bono attorney volunteers will be on-hand to provide supervision and live advice and feedback on drafting.

On April 11, 2019, join the Institute for Transnational Law for a lecture on the different dimensions (law, ethics, politics) involved in justifying the use of force in international affairs. Dr. Schmidt is a Lecturer in International Relations at Swansea University and a Fellow at the LSE, working on ethics and politics of international law and institutions. He has been awarded a 2019 Texas Collaboration Fund Award for joint research on international criminal law institutions with The University of Texas at Austin and Rice University.

Join the Institute for Transnational Law for a book talk by Heidi K. Brown, Director of Legal Research & Associate Professor of Law at Brooklyn Law School. Professor Brown will discuss her recent book, The Introverted Lawyer: A Seven-Step Journey Toward Authentically Empowered Advocacy. Professor Brown will talk for 45-50 minutes, and then save time for questions.

MCLE credit hours are being requested. Professor Brown has previously been approved for 60 minutes of CLE, no ethics credits. Additional information coming soon.

After the talk, the Institute will host a reception in the Jamail Pavilion, adjacent to the Eidman Courtroom. Refreshments will be served.

About the Book:

While naturally loquacious law professors, law students, lawyers, and judges thrive in a world dominated by the Socratic question-and-answer method and rapid-fire oral discourse, quiet thinkers and writers can be sidelined. The Introverted Lawyer illuminates the valuable gifts that introverted, shy, and socially anxious individuals bring to the legal profession—including active listening, deep thinking, empathy, impactful legal writing, creative problem-solving, and thoughtful communication. This presentation also provides a practical seven-step process for amplifying our voices in an authentic manner when we need to make ourselves heard in the legal arena.

About Heidi K. Brown:

Professor Brown joined Brooklyn Law School as Director of the Legal Writing Program in 2016. A prolific scholar and author on the importance of legal writing, she has published four books on predictive and persuasive legal writing and federal litigation, as well as numerous scholarly articles for law journals. In 2017, she published her fifth book, The Introverted Lawyer: A Seven-Step Journey Toward Authentically Empowered Advocacy. Inspired by her own experience conquering the fear of public speaking during her litigation career, she is passionate about helping law students and lawyers “find their authentic lawyer voices” and overcome anxiety about Socratic legal discourse.

Prior to joining the Law School, Brown served as Associate Professor of Law at New York Law School, where she helped launch the school’s Legal Practice program. Before that, she was an Associate Professor of Legal Research and Writing at the Chapman University Dale E. Fowler School of Law in Orange, California.

Brown has more than two decades of experience in law practice. She served as Of Counsel with Moore & Lee, LLP, a boutique litigation firm with offices in the Washington, D.C., area and New York City, where she handled all aspects of litigation and arbitration of complex construction contract and building development disputes. She specialized in brief writing for state and federal cases throughout the United States, and mentored the firm’s junior associates in civil procedure, litigation strategy, and legal writing. Before that, she was an associate at the Manhattan firm of Thacher, Proffitt & Wood and at the Washington, D.C., area firm Watt, Tieder, Hoffar & Fitzgerald, LLP.

In 2014, Brown was appointed to the Fulbright Specialist Roster, making her eligible for two international teaching grants in the next five years through the J. William Fulbright Scholars Program. She studies Italian and has taught legal writing at the University of Trento in Italy. She received her bachelor’s degree in foreign affairs and French litera

Panelists

Michael “Mick” Schlabs: Mr. Schlabs retired as a senior attorney in the International Law Practice Group, Office of the General Counsel, at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC. He was responsible for international science cooperation, export control, counterintelligence and other security-related issues, along with general international and space law matters. He has also been the lead international attorney for the International Space Station, Space Shuttle, human space flight, and aeronautics research. Mick came to NASA after serving 25 years as an Air Force judge advocate. His military career included, among others, assignments as Associate Professor of Law at the U.S. Air Force Academy and legal advisor to various U.S. Air Force units at bases in the United Kingdom, the Philippines and Germany. Prior to moving to NASA, he was Chief of the International and Operations Law Division, HQ U.S. Air Force, at the Pentagon. Rebecca Bresnik: Ms. Bresnik is the Associate Chief Counsel for International Matters and the lead attorney for the International Space Station at NASA. In this role her duties include advising on the multimillion-dollar negotiations and purchases of crew transportation, rescue and related launch services for NASA astronauts to the ISS; advising on international issues and contracting between the ISS Partners--the European Space Agency, Japanese Space Agency, Russian Space Agency and Canadian Space Agency; and agreements in furtherance of NASA exploration beyond low earth orbit. She is also Export Control Counsel for JSC.

Nathan Johnson: Mr. Johnson is an attorney licensed in Washington, DC, and publishes the blog and podcast AstroEsq. He worked at the FAA Office of Commercial Space Transportation during SpaceX’s first berth with the International Space Station, and for the US House of Representatives’ Committee on Science, Space, and Technology during deliberation on human spaceflight regulation. He has published articles on orbital debris removal, on-orbit liability, and outer space property rights. He is also the Regional Organizer for the Manfred Lachs North America Space Law Moot Court Competition.

Alicia Woodley: Ms. Woodley has 17 years of experience spanning the fields of business law, corporate management, and the sciences, and is the Chief Counsel and Director of International Corporate Operations at Axiom Space. Prior to joining Axiom, Ms. Woodley directed special projects as General Counsel and Chief Strategic Officer for the US Medical Innovations family of companies specializing in research, product development, manufacturing, sales, and distribution of plasma-energy surgical devices.

Join Texas Law's Indigent Defense Group for a roundtable discussion of ideas for improving indigent defense in Travis County and building on the recommendations of the Indigent Legal Services Working Group for the creation of a public defender office.

Attending will be Travis County judges, members of the Indigent Legal Services Working Group, community members, and professors from the LBJ School of Public Affairs, the Hicks School of Social Work, and the legal academy. Come to contribute, ask questions, and inform yourself about this constitutionally pressing topic.
