    Professional Development Institute

    The Texas Law Professional Development Institute: Prepared For Practice is taught by industry experts and practicing attorneys, covering facets of new attorney professionalism most sought after by legal employers. Now in its ninth year, the five-week Institute is promoted widely to employers, many of whom contributed to its content. This must-attend program will help you prepare for your summer clerkship or postgraduate job. The program takes place on Thursdays (January 23-February 20, 2020) from 11:50 a.m.-12:50 p.m. Lunch will be served.

    Online registration is open until noon on Wednesday, January 22, 2020.

    Whether you're a 1L preparing for your first summer clerkship or the fall recruiting season, a 2L working to turn your summer clerkship or fellowship into an offer, or a graduating 3L getting a head start on your legal career, the Texas Law Professional Development Institute (PDI), which is presented each Spring, will help you be a more competitive candidate and a better lawyer.

    The Case for Reparations in America

    Join TMLS for its academic symposium on Friday, February 21, 2020. This year’s topic is “The Case for Reparations in the United States”. Scholars and academics in the field of reparations will discuss the legal and moral justifications for reparations from 10-11am. From 11-12pm, our panelists will discuss the practicalities of implementing a system of reparations in the United States today. We will break for lunch from 12-1pm. Our keynote speaker will then address current attempts to pass reparations laws in this country.

    Getting Radical In The South Conference

    Getting Radical in the South (GRITS) is an annual multi-day conference that brings together members of the entire University of Texas community, students throughout the South, and professionals working in advocacy spaces. Our conference is intended to foster an environment on the University of Texas campus, specifically within Texas Law, that explores and promotes radical advocacy in the South. The conference consists of various speakers and workshops that are aimed at helping students around the country learn about various social justice issues affecting the South, while also equipping them with the tools and skills that will help them to become more impactful advocates. In Spring of 2020, the conference will have several individual speakers and panels discussing topics such as sex work, unions, criminal justice, and more. Overall, the event will be an opportunity for students across UT and across the South to learn what legal social justice advocacy means and how they can be the most effective community lawyers.
