Cory Maples Case

Hear from Elana Nightingale Dawson, an associate in Latham’s Connectivity, Privacy, and Information Practice, as she shares her experience representing Cory Maples pro bono. Mr. Maples is a prisoner on death row at Holman Correctional Facility in Alabama. In 2012, Latham won a reversal before the Supreme Court of an Eleventh Circuit decision denying Mr. Maples relief despite a mailroom mix-up caused by his prior lawyers that left him unable to further pursue his claims. After another win before the Eleventh Circuit, Latham—with a team led by Elana—represented Mr. Maples during a week-long evidentiary hearing aimed at showing that Mr. Maples received ineffective assistance of counsel during the penalty stage of his capital trial. Tune in to hear the details of the case, and why the presiding judge has deemed it as “one of the hardest cases she has ever faced”.

This is the key event of the American Branch of the International Law Association (ABILA).

A panel is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 23, 9:00 am ET, and is titled: COVID-19 and Climate Change: A Setback or Strengthening the Resolve to Move Forward?

The panel will focus on the current challenges of climate change policies. To launch this year’s event series, The Center for Women of Law presents, A Conversation with Mary Jo White: Litigation Partner at Debevoise, Counselor to Boards of Directors, former Chair of the SEC and former US Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Mary Jo White, will be interviewed by Susan Blount, President-Elect of CWIL’s Executive Committee and retired General Counsel of Prudential Financial. They will discuss Ms. White’s storied career as a prominent New York City litigator, long service U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and one of the longest tenured Chairs of the U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission. During this conversation, they will explore the building blocks of Ms. White’s trailblazing career and her advice on a variety of topics.

Texas Law Board of Advocates is excited to present the Foley & Lardner Novice Mock Trial Competition (formerly known as Gardere). Foley & Lardner is an intramural activity for students to learn and practice in a low-stakes setting the presentation and storytelling involved in trial court.
