    Alternative Curriculum: Contract Law

This talk asks whether and how contract law is relevant for the goal of promoting social justice. Put differently: should someone interested in promoting social justice in the U.S. devote any attention and effort to thinking about contract law and its possible reform? Answering this question requires first answering two others: What’s social justice and what’s contract law? Once these answers are given, contract law emerges as having some relevance for the project of transforming society to promote social justice. Contract law governs the procedure for forming enforceable market transactions between individuals and firms. As such, it can never be the main target and means of meaningful and equitable social transformation. Nevertheless, certain aspects of contract law—such as those pertaining to non-fungibility of certain human interests or “boilerplate” contracting—are significant and even indispensable elements of a more comprehensive project of institutional transformation in pursuit of a fundamental structure of society that is in line with human freedom and justice.

Through investigative reporting that includes footage shot on contraband cell phones and insider accounts from former prison officials and others, the film exposes shocking brutality and institutional corruption in a secretive system that has grown to consume a quarter of Alabama’s state budget. The film screening will be followed by a discussion between Prison and Jail Innovation Lab Director Michele Deitch and Beth Shelburne, an Alabama-based journalist who is a co-producer of the film.

    Bowden Fellows Series: Greg Dickinson

Calls to “future proof” the legal system against emerging technologies—AI, algorithmic decision-making, deepfakes, and more—now pervade public discourse. Professor Gregory Dickinson challenges the premise that rapid technological change requires similarly rapid lawmaking. Drawing on history, sociology, and public-choice theory, he argues that the most powerful tools for governing technological innovation are the general-purpose principles already embedded in our legal system. From Gutenberg’s press to modern AI systems, premature, technology-specific regulation often entrenches incumbents, suppresses experimentation, and destabilizes legal principles that have proven durable across technological eras. A legal system committed to generality, stability, and adaptability—rather than bespoke rules for each new invention—better protects both innovation and the rule of law.

Lunch will be served. Please register at the link. We hope you join us!

    Bar Prep Matchmaking

    Dearest 2L,

Most big law firms pay for their incoming associates’ bar prep. However, students pursuing clerkships, government, and nonprofit positions immediately after graduation often do not have that same opportunity.

If your big law firm is paying for your bar prep course, it is highly likely that the bar prep company will also provide a course for a public interest “buddy.” There is no cost to you or your firm. This is a meaningful and immediate way to invest in access to public interest work and to support your peers!

At our 2L Bar Prep Matchmaking Mixer, Big Law 2Ls can match with a public interest 2L to help ensure that everyone has access to a bar prep course. If you are a student working at a big law firm, you would simply ask the bar prep company of your choice to extend bar prep coverage to your public interest buddy. We will provide next steps and suggested language to make that request easy.

This practice has been successfully carried out for years, and this project is designed to make the process smoother and more transparent.

You may already have a friend in mind to match with, and if so, wonderful! Drop by the mixer, grab a treat, and let us know via the survey! If not, we are here to help facilitate a match. Please fill out the survey below so we can better understand the bar prep landscape of the 2L class, and stay tuned for more information.

The conference features a full day of panels examining emerging legal and policy issues in energy and offshore industries. Sessions bring together international scholars, industry experts, and policymakers to discuss maritime law, carbon management, developments in the hydrocarbon sector, and offshore wind regulation.

The morning begins with a maritime law session addressing safety and liability issues associated with new marine fuels and the offshore industry. A second session then focuses on carbon sequestration, exploring how CO₂ can be transported by sea and the potential for offshore carbon storage.

After lunch, the afternoon sessions shift to recent developments in the hydrocarbon sector, including regulatory changes in Mexico and geopolitical tensions affecting the natural gas market. The day concludes with a panel on offshore wind, discussing recent U.S. policy developments, lease cancellations and litigation, and the challenges private companies face when developing offshore wind projects.

Overall, the day highlights how evolving energy technologies and global politics are reshaping maritime law, carbon management strategies, and offshore energy development.

Texas Pro-Life Laws: Are They Working?

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED. If in doubt, verify with the web-based events calendar.

Join Law Students for Life for a conversation with Dr. Joe Pojman, President of Texans for Life Coalition and one of the most influential advocates in the development of pro-life legislation in Texas.

Dr. Pojman has spent more than three decades working in public policy and advocacy to protect human life, helping craft many of the laws that shape Texas’s current pro-life legal framework. A former aerospace engineer who worked at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, he later earned a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin before dedicating his career to the pro-life movement.

The discussion will examine the legal landscape following the passage of major Texas pro-life laws and ask a key question: are these policies achieving their intended goals? Dr. Pojman will share insights from his experience working at the Texas Capitol, helping draft legislation, and evaluating how the laws operate in practice.

    Lunch will be provided.
