Texas Journal on Civil Liberties & Civil Rights, with the Immigration and Nationality Section of the State Bar, presents its annual symposium: "Civil Rights on the Border." The keynote speaker will be James Ho, former Texas Solicitor General. Mr. Ho will speak on birthright citizenship and the Fourteenth Amendment. Come learn about Equal Justice Works’ public interest programs and initiatives. Equal Justice Works’ senior program manager Charlene Gomes will discuss both summer and postgraduate opportunities with Equal Justice Works and options for relieving educational debt after you graduate.

The Equal Justice Works Summer Corps Program provides financial support for law students who dedicate their summer to providing critically needed legal assistance in low-income and underserved communities. Summer Corps members are awarded a $1,132 Americorps Education voucher for their service.

The Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellows Program places fellows in one- or two-year fellowships at host organizations around the country. Fellows play a critical role in securing affordable housing, lost wages, orders of protection, health care, public benefits and education for low-income and underserved communities.

The Equal Justice Works Postgraduate Fellowship Program provides financial and technical support to lawyers working on innovative and effective legal projects. The two-year fellowships offer salary and generous loan repayment assistance.

The Public Defender Corps is an Equal justice Works and Southern Public Defender Training Center program that provides three-year fellowships aimed at addressing the ongoing national crisis of providing quality representation to accused persons who cannot afford counsel.

The Human Rights and the Arts Working Group at the Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice invites you to attend a screening of the film "Nostalgia de la Luz"! The screening will take place on Monday, March 7 at 3:30pm.

A discussion on human rights and their portrayal in film will follow, featuring Prof. Carcamo-Huechante (Department of Spanish and Portuguese), Prof. Zipporah Wiseman (School of Law), and Dr. Lucas Lixinski (Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice).

Among many intersecting themes, the film sheds light on several Chilean women’s search for their relatives, victims of “enforced disappearance” during Augusto Pinochet’s reign. The film, written and directed by Patricio Guzmán, was featured in the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, with the following synopsis:

“In Chile, at three thousand metres altitude, astronomers from all over the world gather together in the Atacama desert to observe the stars. The desert sky is so translucent that it allows them to see right to the boundaries of the universe.

It is also a place where the harsh heat of the sun keeps human remains intact: those of the mummies, explorers and miners. But also the remains of the dictatorship's political prisoners.

Whilst the astronomers examine the most distant galaxies in search of probable extraterrestrial life, at the foot of the observatories a group of women are digging through the desert soil in search of their disappeared relatives…”

Senator Rodney Ellis was elected to the Texas Senate in 1990. He has passed over 500 pieces of legislation including the TEXAS Grant program, which has disbursed $1.8 billion in tuition dollars and fees to over 207,000 students. Senator Ellis is a leader in economic development, education, civil rights, responsible environmental policy, tax cuts for the middle class, criminal justice, and workforce development issues. On March 9th the senator will be discussing the 82nd Legislative Session in the Auditorium at 2:00.

The session began Tuesday, January 11th and will conclude May 30th. Governor Rick Perry designated two emergency issues for the session: 1) abolishing sanctuary cities in Texas, and 2) protecting private property rights in eminent domain cases. Come hear Senator Rodney Ellis talk about this already controversial legislative session.

The Court Access Program is a consortium of legal and social service providers designed to assess whether civil and criminal courts in Travis County are adequately meeting the needs of families who experience domestic violence. The Court Access Program will collect data that will be used to improve the legal process for survivors of domestic violence. The Court Access Program is currently recruiting law student volunteers to attend protective order hearings to collect data, paying particular attention to treatment of litigants and the outcomes of hearings. The Court Access Program, through the UT Law Pro Bono Program, is seeking students who can monitor Travis County courts during the weeks from March 21 through April 15. Court monitoring sessions will take place from 8am-12pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students are asked to commit to at least one two-hour shift on either a Tuesday or Thursday between 8am-12pm. Students may volunteer for as many sessions as their schedule allows. There will be a two-hour training at the Law School for interested students on this Thursday, March 10th, at 5pm. We will provide pizza for participants. Students who wish to attend the training should email Elena Yujuico at eyujuico@law.utexas.edu, and should include their availability for either a Tuesday or Thursday court watch session(s) between March 21 through April 15. Erin Rodgers, an attorney with Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts (TALA), and UT Law alum John Spong, who now writes for Texas Monthly Magazine, will be speaking on their careers in law and the arts. Professor David Sokolow will moderate the panel.

TALA is a non-profit organization that helps meet the legal and accounting needs of artists and arts nonprofits across the State of Texas by matching low-income artists and small budget arts nonprofits with volunteer attorneys and accountants to assist with arts-related legal and financial matters.

In 2010, John Spong was nominated for a National Magazine Award in the category of Leisure Interests for his story about Texas dance halls, “Step Right Up." He has been a finalist for the Texas Institute of Letters’ O. Henry Award for Magazine Journalism four times, which he won in 2006 for “The Good Book and the Bad Book” and again in 2010 for “Holding Garmsir.” He was also named 2005 Writer of the Year by the City and Regional Magazine Association.

Topics for discussion include the latest info on the Patent Bar Exam and who can take it; how it works, now that it's on computer; when you should take it (you only need an undergraduate degree to sit for it); how and when the new Rules changes coming out of the Patent Office will impact the Exam, and; recommendations on when and how to study for the Patent Exam.
