    Being a Public Defender

    (Program is at 1:10-2:10 p.m.) Learn about careers in indigent defense from UT Law alumni serving as public defenders. Panelists will discuss their careers and offer advice on how to land a job as a public defender. Panelists include Genesis Draper ’06, Assistant Federal Public Defender, Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Southern District of Texas (Houston) and formerly the Assistant Public Defender, Office of the Metropolitan Public Defender (Nashville, TN), and Aron Israelite ’09, Trial Attorney, Federal Defenders of San Diego Inc. Moderated by Nicole Simmons, Director of Public Service Programs, Career Services Office.

    Applying for Judicial Clerkships (Pt. I)

    This is the first of a series of meetings for 2Ls and 3Ls who will be applying for 2015-term clerkships. This meeting is geared towards students who will be applying for the most competitive appellate court clerkships, and will focus on preparation for a January/February application period. UT Law Judicial Clerkship Advisors will discuss how to determine what courts you are competitive for, how to select judges, and how and when to apply for clerkships.     Sign-up at 9:00 p.m. on TUESDAY, OCTOBER 8 is on a first-come, first-served basis on UT Law Symplicity . Back by popular demand! Participating UT Law J.D. students will have the opportunity to network one-on-one with legal professionals from a variety of practice areas, as well as fellow students, during several short (8-10 minutes) speed networking rounds prior to Cocktails & Conversation. We request that students commit to attend the entire speed networking portion of the event. Please arrive no later than 5:00 p.m. Free parking available in the Museum Garage.

    Learn how to effectively tailor your resume for various legal jobs in the private and public sector. Please bring your laptop and draft legal style resume to the workshop. Examples of resumes are provided in the CSO Career Development Handbook that you will receive during the 1L Orientation and Career Development Workshops. All 1Ls must submit a copy of your resume to the CSO at least 24 hours prior to your first career counseling appointment, which will take place after October 15.

    Environmental Law Internships

    Tom Bohl is an assistant attorney general at the Texas Attorney General’s Office, where he has worked for 21 years, defending state environmental appeals in district and appellate courts, prosecuting civil suits to enforce environmental and public health laws, and representing the state in interstate water matters.     The Energy Center Distinguished Lecture Series brings energy and environmental law speakers to campus to speak with UT Law students and faculty.
