Nikiya Natale receives 2012–2013 Baron & Budd Public Interest Scholarship

Nikiya Natale, 2012–2013 Baron & Budd Public Interest Scholar.

Nikiya Natale, a third-year student at the University of Texas School of Law, has been selected to receive a Baron & Budd Public Interest Scholarship for the 2012–2013 academic year.

The scholarships are made possible by a generous gift from the Baron & Budd law firm, and are administered by the William Wayne Justice Center for Public Interest Law at the Law School. Students who receive the $4,500 scholarships commit to working three hundred pro bono hours during the school year with a nonprofit organization providing legal services to underserved individuals or communities.

The scholarship will support Natale’s work with American Gateways assisting immigrant women who are detained at the T. Don Hutto Correctional Facility in Taylor, Texas.  Natale has participated in the Law School’s Immigration Clinic and worked with the South Texas Pro Bono Asylum Representation Project in Harlingen and with Appleseed in Austin.  Last year she was a Rapoport Human Rights Scholar.  Upon graduation she plans to practice immigration law.
