🤘Student Spotlight: Monica Dike ’25

Monica DikeFor this edition of Texas Law’s Student Spotlight series, meet 1L Monica Dike!

Q: As an undergraduate student at Sam Houston State University, you were involved in leadership roles in student organizations. Can you share more about how that experience prepared you for law school?

A: Leadership played an integral role during my undergraduate experience. I started off on the executive boards for some of the affinity groups on my campus. My experience in those roles taught me what it means to be a part of a team. I looked up to the presidents of those organizations and took note of what it means to be a leader. I eventually began my own organization and became a student ambassador. As a leader, I had to remember and apply what I had observed: to listen actively and to welcome outside ideas, constructive criticism, and requests. All of these skills help me today as a law student, as I actively listen to my peers, mentors, and professors. I am meeting many diverse individuals, which requires an open mind to new ideas. I welcome constructive criticism because it plays a huge role in growth, which is required in order to become a successful lawyer.

Q:  What did you wish you knew before becoming a student at Texas Law?

A: I wish I knew how friendly and supportive everyone is at Texas Law. Before coming here, I imagined law school to be a chaotic, competitive environment. Now that I am almost through with my first semester, I realize how lucky I am to be surrounded by amazing, supportive students and faculty.

Q: What was the weirdest UT tradition you had to learn and adapt to?

A: I would not deem it weird, however, the UT bell tower ringing every 15 minutes was definitely something I had to adjust to! I now find it so helpful when I am running late and forget to check the time.

Q:  How do you envision your life after Texas Law?

A: After Texas Law, I see myself excelling in one of the many amazing firms in Texas. I would like to give back to the school because it is equipping me to be the best attorney I can be while supporting me through it all.
