Tell us about your experience performing internationally as a jazz saxophonist and how that has enriched your life.
Ever since I began studying jazz early in high school, performing internationally was one of my biggest goals. I am extremely grateful for the opportunities I have had to share the stage with brilliant musicians and continue jazz’s rich traditions as I performed internationally as a jazz saxophonist in a professional quartet and with several orchestras. Whether I was performing with my own “Times 4” Jazz Quartet throughout Texas, playing in various big bands in Louisiana, or playing solo in Chile, each performance called upon different aspects of my ability. Through these experiences, I learned and honed many valuable skills I will continue to use for the rest of my life.
What are some ways that you manage stress and maintain a healthy balance between school and life?
I try to stick to a schedule throughout the week where I force myself to put school aside for the rest of the night at a specific time each day. I give myself adequate time at the end of each day to keep up with my passions and hobbies. Playing jazz, weightlifting, and rock climbing are activities that serve as outlets for me after stressful days. I also try to make studying fun on the weekends by trying new coffee shops.
What is your favorite book that you’d recommend to your friends — and why?
While I do not have an all-time favorite, I really enjoyed “Miles: The Autobiography.” It illustrates how Miles Davis established his unique sound in a jazz scene that was mainly focused on one subgenre at a time. The book also recounts his own battle with the same struggles many jazz musicians had during his time. Miles also writes about his experience with other big names such as Charlie Parker and John Coltrane.
Who and what inspires you?
My wonderful parents are a prominent source of inspiration in my life. With my father teaching at the high school level and my mother teaching at the elementary level, I watched them succeed in their own ways with two completely different age groups. As someone with experience teaching saxophone at the middle school and high school levels, I greatly respect the passion they bring to their teaching work. Seeing their impressive work ethic has had a tremendous impact on my own.
