On Friday, April 5, 2013, the Law School’s William Wayne Justice Center for Public Interest Law and the Texas Journal for Civil Liberties and Civil Rights will present an all-day conference entitled “The Role of Law in Closing the Educational Achievement Gap.” -

Law School prevails in Intellectual Property Moot Court regional competition
The University of Texas School of Law defeated South Texas College of Law on March 17, 2013, in the final round of the Southern Regional component of the Giles Sutherland Rich Memorial Moot Court. This competition is sponsored by the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), a professional development organization for intellectual property lawyers. The Southern Regional, held this year in the federal courthouse in Houston, was hosted by members of the local AIPLA chapter. -

The University of Texas School of Law’s interscholastic team has won the regional round of the American Association for Justice’s Student Trial Advocacy Competition, and will compete for a national championship in the competition in New Orleans, Louisiana, in April. -

Law School Alumni Association announces 2013 distinguished alumni award recipients
The University of Texas Law Alumni Association has announced the recipients of its 2013 distinguished alumni awards. Kathryn Fuller, ’76, received the Outstanding Alumnus Award; The Honorable Robert M. Parker, ’64, received the Lifetime Achievement Award; Joe R. Long, ’58, received the Distinguished Alumnus Award for Community Service; and Dick DeGuerin, ’65, received the Honorary Order of the Coif. -

On March 22–23, 2013, the Capital Punishment Center at the University of Texas School of Law will sponsor a symposium on “Mass Incarceration and the Death Penalty.” Presentations will explore the possible connections between two current and much-discussed criminal justice phenomena: the United States’s disproportionately high rate of incarceration and its status as the only Western democracy that retains the death penalty. -

The Law School's annual Diversity Weekend was held February 22–23, 2013, at the University of Texas. Alumni from all over met with Dean Ward Farnsworth and representatives from the Center for Women in Law as well as students from the Asian Law Students Association, Chicano/Hispanic Students Association, OUTLaw, the Thurgood Marshall Legal Society, and the Women's Law Caucus. -

The Law School’s William Wayne Justice Center has received a $500,000 grant from the Texas General Land Office to fund work on the Texas Title Homeownership Opportunity Program Project. The GLO grant comes from federal funds designated to assist Hurricanes Dolly and Ike survivors relocate to higher opportunity neighborhoods. The project is part of a larger coordinated hurricane recovery program that includes the participation of communities affected by the disasters, advocates for low-income survivors, and local, state, and federal agencies. -

Senator Ninfa Salinas of Mexico will give a talk entitled “The Past, Present, and Future State of the Environmental and Energy Sectors in Mexico” on March 1, 2013, at 11:30 a.m. in JON 5.207 at the Law School. The talk is part of the Distinguished Lecture Series presented by the Law School’s Center for Global Energy, International Arbitration, and Environmental Law. Lunch will be provided. -

On Tuesday, March 19, 2013, the University of Texas School of Law’s William Wayne Justice Center for Public Interest Law and Career Services Office will present speaker Vanita Gupta, deputy legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union and director of the ACLU’s National Campaign to End Overincarceration. Gupta has been involved in several significant Texas cases.
