Texas Law Gender Affirmation Project Lead Student Counselors

Lead student counselors will work closely with a Supervising Attorney and Mithoff Pro Bono Scholars to manage applicants and clinic documents. Students will help with individual appointments, prepare for sessions, answer applicant questions, and prepare petitions, orders, and Statements of Inability to Pay. The Gender Affirmation Project provides helps people in the trans community change their name and/or gender marker on basic forms of identification.

The Gender Affirmation Project is an internal project of the Richard and Ginni Mithoff Pro Bono Program in partnership with OUTLaw.

Approximate hours of work requested
Up to 5 hours during the fall semester, in addition to the required training and clinic sessions. Lead student counselors must attend one GAP Training Session (Thursday, October 10, 6pm-8pm, TNH 2.124) AND at least one GAP Clinic Session (Saturday, October 12, 10:30am-2pm in Austin or Saturday November 9 in San Antonio)
Training
Students must attend the next GAP Training Session (Thursday, October 10, 6pm-8pmpm); students also must attend a separate training for lead student counselors that will be scheduled based on student availability
Skills used
Client interviewing; communication about client’s legal needs; document preparation and review
Project location
The Austin session is at Travis County Law Library, 314 W. 11th Street (October 12), and the San Antonio session is at the Pride Center (November 9); individual appointments with service recipients are conducted at the law school.
