This Program is designed to provide stipends to fund public interest and government internships for a select number of first- and second-year UT Law students. This Program will be funded by donations from sponsors of the 2011 Study Break, a market-conscious modification to this successful annual event.

All law students will have the opportunity to take a break from studying and enjoy snacks and promotional materials, and students who are selected to participate in the Study Break Public Service Stipend Program will receive a stipend to support at least 8 to 10 weeks of work in unpaid legal internships with a government agency or a 501(c)(3) public interest organization. Internships with judicial courts are not eligible.

Students who are interested in participating in the Program must secure an internship with an eligible organization, designate a supervising attorney at that organization, and apply for a place in the Program. Both the value and number of stipends awarded depends on the availability of funding; selection into the Program is expected to be competitive. More information will be available in late March/early April.

    Enforced Disappearances in Mexico

Ariel Dulitzky, Director of the UT Human Rights Clinic, is a member of the United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances. He just returned from Mexico where he was part of a fact-finding mission on the situation of enforced disappearances. He will present and discuss the preliminary observations of the Working Group mission. In a broader perspective, Prof. Dulitzky will analyze the relationship and interactions between an international human rights mechanism, the Mexican government and civil society organizations.

Dr. Ricardo Ainslie, a professor in the Department of Education Psychology, will serve as a discussant. He directed the film "¡Ya Basta!" ("Enough!), a disturbing, intimate documentary on the epidemic of kidnappings and related crimes that started in Mexico in the '90s.

This event is sponsored by the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies, the Rapaport Center for Human Rights and Justice and the Human Rights Clinic.

Drawing Board Luncheon - Nadav Shoked

The Drawing Board Luncheon is a regular colloquium series designed to permit members of the UT faculty (permanent and visiting) to present projects at an early stage of development. Unlike many colloquia series, here and elsewhere, that are often described as fora for the presentation of "works in progress" but which, in actuality, feature works that are entirely, or substantially, complete, the Drawing Board lives up to its name. This is a forum for faculty members who would like feedback, suggestions, and guidance at a point in time at which they can be made use of.
