Hina Jilani is a prominent human rights lawyer and activist and Advocate for the Supreme Court of Pakistan. She will present a talk entitled "Rights, Conflict and Crises." The event is co-sponsored with the Wilson Chair in Pakistan Studies at UT Austin.

Hina Jilani is a prominent lawyer and has been a civil society activist in Pakistan for the past three decades. She founded the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and is an Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. She served as a UN Special Representative on Human Rights Defenders from 2000 to 2008, and most recently served as a member of the United Nations Fact Finding Mission on Gaza in 2009. Over her long and impressive career as an activist, Jilani established Pakistan’s first all-women’s law firm in 1980, Pakistan’s first legal aid center in 1986, and Dastak – a housing facility for women who are targets of honor killings. She has conducted many landmark cases setting new standards for human rights in Pakistan, focusing particularly on the most vulnerable populations in society including women, minorities, children, and prisoners. She has repeatedly called for the democratization of the political system in Pakistan and amendments to the Constitution to increase the representation of women in its legislature. Jilani’s work has made her a target of hostile propaganda, arrests, and abuse. Despite this, she continues to live in Lahore and pursue her work. Her publications include Human Rights and Democratic Development in Pakistan (1998) and Hadood Laws: A Divine Sanction? (1988). She was awarded the Millennium Peace Prize for Women in 2001 in recognition of her life-long contribution to peace-building and human rights. In 2013, The Elders – a group of independent leaders working for peace, justice, and human rights founded by Nelson Mandela – appointed Jilani as an Elder.

Madhu Chugh, counsel at WilmerHale in DC, served as the director of health care policy for the Kerry–Edwards campaign and worked on healthcare policy for Senator Edward Kennedy. She is an alumna of The University of Texas and a recipient of the 2013 Outstanding Young Texas Ex Award.

This workshop will provide a basic understanding of video advocacy and the WITNESS methodology, including how to make initial decisions about the strategic use of video within your legal campaigns such as a video’s goal, message, audience, story and distribution. Through case studies from around the world, practical exercises and discussions, participants will learn: Emerging trends and precedent in using video in the courtroom to fight for justice and accountability. How video can fill an attorney’s evidence “to do” list: Strategies for developing advocacy plans built around visual evidence, testimony and stories, and for using video to target domestic and international institutions including the state and national government, UN and regional commissions, other governmental decision-makers, the media, and allied organizations Tools and networks to facilitate the capturing, management and sharing of videos with enhanced evidentiary value for effective use in accountability processes. Video advocacy uses one of our greatest strengths—our stories—to help overcome resource and political obstacles. In particular, video from the frontlines can be invaluable for criminal investigations and court proceedings. In many situations, eyewitnesses and on-the-ground human rights activists are better positioned to collect evidence of human rights abuses than professional investigators because investigators often arrive after-the-fact when the violence has stopped and the evidence has deteriorated or is gone. However, while citizen shot video often provides helpful clues about what took place and who might be responsible, the quality seldom passes the higher bar needed to be used as evidence in a court of law. With slight modifications, the footage frontline documenters often risk their lives to capture can – in addition to exposing injustice and supporting advocacy efforts – serve as evidence in criminal and civil justice processes. Human rights advocates can also employ new tactics and techniques to incorporate video and other media into their work.

Lopez, deputy chief in the Special Litigation Section of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, on “Policing the Police: The Federal Government’s Role in Reforming Police Practices.” Lopez is a national expert on policing and one of the authors of the DOJ’s recent investigative report on Ferguson, Missouri.

Lopez's visit as a G. Rollie White Public Interest Scholar is supported by a generous gift from the G. Rollie White Trust. The program brings outstanding legal scholars, practitioners and advocates from the field of public service to Texas Law to foster discussion of issues related to public interest law, to raise the profile of lawyers working in this area, and to encourage students to view public service as an honored and expected part of every legal career. With the recent passage of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, the Texas Legislature has taken a positive step in advancing efforts against sex trafficking. Advocates for immigration reform also see these measures as a potential gateway for advancing enforcement initiatives against different forms of illegal labor trafficking. Stacy Jonas, Managing Attorney of the Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid's Human Trafficking Team and a leading expert on labor trafficking in Texas will lead a discussion on her past human trafficking work and ways the TVPA can be used to advocate and litigate for worker reforms. Stacy is a graduate of Yale Law School where she served as Senior Editor of the Yale Law Review and was awarded the Khosla Memorial Fund for Human Dignity Prize and Judge Stephen Reinhardt Scholar Award. Prior to her work at TRLA, Stacie was a Liman Fellow at Southern Migrant Legal Services and law clerk for Hon. Keith P. Ellison, U.S. District Court, Southern District of Texas.

This conference examines fundamental changes evolving in contemporary employment relationships. One of the pivotal legal, social, and economic evolutions of the 20th century was the advent of modern labor and employment laws that replaced the 19th century preeminence of individual “freedom of contract” and individual responsibility for wages and labor conditions. Now, however, the existing regime for ensuring workplace fairness is being fundamentally challenged by new technologies, and by shifting political attitudes about social and economic regulation.

This conference will explore the next generation of employment law issues, including changing concepts and enforcement challenges related to the very definition of an “employment” relationship; realignments in the enforcement role of courts versus private arbitration; the evolving employment rights of LGBT workers, immigrants, and guest workers; and navigating new procedural hurdles to enforcement of workplace rights.

The Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice and the Lozano Long Institute for Latin American Studies (LLILAS) present a roundtable: "Certifiably Fair: Can Consumers Monitor Human Rights?" The roundtable will consider the possibilities and limitations of various forms of certification regimes for the realization, enforcement and governance of human rights. It is part of a larger project of the Rapoport Center that is examining relationships among natural resource governance, economic inequality and human rights. The occasion for this roundtable is to take advantage of the visit of Professor José Aylwin, who will be here for a week as a LLILAS Visiting Resource Professor. Additional participants include Sean Sellers, the co-founder and a senior investigator at the Fair Food Council and a staff-member of the newly created Worker-driven Social Responsibility Collaborative, Jessica Champagne, the Director of Research and Advocacy for the Worker Rights Consortium, an independent labor rights monitoring organization, and Michael Conroy, a principal of "Colibrí Consulting – Certification for Sustainable Development."
