Four Class of 2012 Law School students earn Equal Justice Works fellowships
Four members of the Class of 2012 have received post-graduate fellowships from Equal Justice Works, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., whose declared mission is to support “the next generation of lawyers who commit themselves to public interest law and endeavor to provide effective representation to underserved communities and causes.” Christine Nishimura, Jordan Pollock, Amelia Ruiz Fischer, and Keegan Warren-Clem received the prestigious two-year fellowships, which provide competitive salaries and loan repayment assistance after graduation. -

Sundance Film Festival documentary Hot Coffee to be screened at Law School April 12, 2012
The Law School will host a screening of Hot Coffee, a Sundance documentary film about the McDonald’s hot coffee case, Liebeck v. McDonald's Restaurants, and its aftermath, on Thursday, April 12, 2012. -

Texas Law Fellowships announces 2012 Excellence in Public Interest Award recipients
Texas Law Fellowships has announced the recipients of the 2012 Excellence in Public Interest Awards. They are: Ian Spechler, ‘07, founder of the Legal Representation for Dually Managed Youth Project; David Gonzalez, founding partner of a sliding-scale criminal defense firm in Austin; UT Law Clinical Professors Bill Allison and Patricia Cummings of the Criminal Defense Clinic, who are being recognized for their work on the Michael Morton case; and Jordan Pollock, a third-year UT Law student. -

Law School to host symposium, “Countermajoritarianism and the Courts,” March 30–31, 2012
The University of Texas School of Law will host a symposium entitled “Countermajoritarianism and the Courts” on March 30–31, 2012. The symposium will be the first systematic reexamination in years of the extent to which the United States Supreme Court can meaningfully be described as a “countermajoritarian institution” in American political life. -

Law School team wins national championship at Conrad B. Duberstein Bankruptcy Moot Court Competition
Students from the University of Texas School of Law’s interscholastic team won first place in the twentieth annual Conrad B. Duberstein Bankruptcy Moot Court Competition, held at St. John’s University in Queens, New York, March 9–12, 2012. Third-year students Brian Cumings and Eric Werlinger won first place at the competition, surviving a field of fifty-four teams. Two other members of the team representing UT Law, third-year students Gabriel Markoff and Zachary Popovich, advanced to the final day of the competition and ultimately placed as finalists. -

Law School symposium to address lynching and the death penalty, March 23-24, 2012
“Lynching and the Death Penalty” will be held at the University of Texas School of Law on Friday and Saturday, March 23-24, 2012 in the Eidman Courtroom. The symposium will bring together leading scholars and advocates to explore the historical link between lynching and the death penalty, their similarities and differences, and the enduring role of lynching and race discrimination in contemporary capital litigation. -

Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Ray Bonner will discuss his recent book, Anatomy of Injustice, at the University of Texas School of Law on March 5, 2012, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in TNH 3.142. Bonner’s book recounts the efforts of Diana Holt, ’94, who represented a young mentally disabled man, Edward Lee Elmore, who had been convicted of murdering an elderly woman in Greenwood, South Carolina, in 1982.
