Law School symposium to address lynching and the death penalty, March 23-24, 2012
“Lynching and the Death Penalty” will be held at the University of Texas School of Law on Friday and Saturday, March 23-24, 2012 in the Eidman Courtroom. The symposium will bring together leading scholars and advocates to explore the historical link between lynching and the death penalty, their similarities and differences, and the enduring role of lynching and race discrimination in contemporary capital litigation. -

Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Ray Bonner will discuss his recent book, Anatomy of Injustice, at the University of Texas School of Law on March 5, 2012, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in TNH 3.142. Bonner’s book recounts the efforts of Diana Holt, ’94, who represented a young mentally disabled man, Edward Lee Elmore, who had been convicted of murdering an elderly woman in Greenwood, South Carolina, in 1982. -

Law School to host events for children and teens as part of Explore UT, Saturday, March 3, 2012
On Saturday, March 3, 2012, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the University of Texas at Austin will host “the biggest open house in Texas”—Explore UT. This annual event is a hands-on introduction to the University to schoolchildren from kindergarten through high school through a variety of events, performances, lectures, exhibits, and other activities. As in past years, the Law School will host several events. -

The Bernard and Audre Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice at the University of Texas School of Law is pleased to announce its eighth annual conference, “Property Rights and the Human Rights Agenda,” to take place March 1–2, 2012. This multidisciplinary and comparative conference will explore the ambivalent relationship between human rights and property and the extent to which the right to property might advance a human rights agenda. -

Reception will begin at 6:00 p.m., and Horton’s talk, “More Security, Less Democracy? Struggling to Maintain Democratic Voices in the National Security Debate” will follow at 6:30 p.m. -

Professor Jorge Contesse of the Universidad Diego Portales in Santiago, Chile, will present a talk entitled “Inter-American Constitutionalism: The Creation and Internalization of Human Rights.” The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 3:30 p.m.–5:30 p.m. in TNH 3.142 at the University of Texas School of Law. -

Seventh Annual Oil, Gas, and Energy Law Symposium to be held February 9–10, 2012
The 2012 Texas Energy Law Symposium is the Texas Journal of Oil, Gas, and Energy Law’s seventh annual CLE symposium. Speakers are leading academics and practitioners in oil, gas, and energy law. This year’s symposium promises to be an excellent forum for a dynamic and informative discussion about a wide range of current and future energy-related legal issues.
