Three Students receive Baron & Budd Public Interest Scholarships
Three students at the University of Texas School of Law have been selected to receive Baron & Budd Public Interest Scholarships for the 2011–2012 academic year. Students who receive the $4,500 scholarships commit to working three hundred pro bono hours during the school year with a nonprofit organization providing legal services to underserved individuals or communities. -

On Monday, October 17, 2011, the Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice will host a Human Rights Happy Hour. Professor Tara Melish of the University at Buffalo Law School, SUNY, will present a talk entitled, “From Monuments to Ladders: Collapsing Social Rights Typologies into a More Usable, Enforcement-Oriented Schema.” The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 3:30 p.m.–5:30 p.m., in the Sheffield Room (TNH 2.111) at the University of Texas School of Law. -

Litan, the inaugural recipient of the $50,000 Massey Prize for Research in Law, Innovation, and Capital Markets. Litan will speak at the Massey Prize Symposium, along with other distinguished speakers who will evaluate his work and its impact. -

The William Wayne Justice Center for Public Interest Law is joining the LBJ School of Public Affairs to undertake a major study for the Texas Legislature on the use of contracts for deed in Texas colonias. The study will focus on title issues, variations of contracts for deed, and abuses during the sale of property in these communities. It will also examine wider issues of title irregularity as these emerge through informal land sales, subdivision, and intestate inheritance. -

European Securities and Markets Authority issues call to study Henry Hu’s “empty voting” phenomenon
On September 14, 2011, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) published a call for evidence on “empty voting” within the European Union (EU) and the effects of this and related “decoupling” phenomena. Henry T. C. Hu, Allan Shivers Chair in the Law of Banking and Finance at the University of Texas School of Law is the lead or sole author on pioneering articles that coined the term “empty voting,” as well as associated terms such as “empty crediting” and “hidden (morphable) ownership.” -

Kamela Bridges and Wayne Schiess write book on litigation writing for students and new lawyers
To help prepare students and new lawyers for these forms of writing, Law School writing lecturers Kamela Bridges and Wayne Schiess have written a book, Writing for Litigation, organized around the types of documents a trial lawyer writes, from an engagement letter at the beginning of a case to jury instructions at the end.
