For this edition of Texas Law’s Student Spotlight series, meet 1L Caroline Colgin!
Q: What has been the best surprise about your law school experience?
A: The support system at Texas Law is incredible. From my first day as a 1L, the upperclassmen and professors have been incredibly helpful and they sincerely want to help 1Ls in any way possible. If I need help in a class or simply someone to talk with, I know the entire Texas Law community is there to help.
How has your family heritage and history impacted your life journey?
A: My mother immigrated from Cuba and became a lawyer in the United States. Growing up, I was constantly inspired by her hard work and dedication. Her love for the law inspired me to go to law school, and I would be lucky to be half the lawyer she is one day.
What made you choose Texas Law?
A: I knew that I wanted to work in Texas after graduating from law school. Texas Law’s employment statistics are incredibly impressive, and I knew the school would provide me with unmatched opportunities to work within the state. My sisters also attended UT for their undergraduate degrees, and their personal testimonies of the school were incredibly persuasive!
What did you wish you knew before becoming a law student at UT?
A: While I did have some exposure to the legal world before coming to law school, I was afraid that I was not prepared for law school. Texas Law truly teaches its students the ins and outs of the law, and there is no reason to stress if you do not have legal experience before law school.
What are some ways that you manage stress and maintain a healthy balance between school and life?
A: One of the best things my friends and I did during our first semester was plan activities under a strict agreement that we were not allowed to talk about anything involving law school. We would go to a new restaurant or take a walk around Lady Bird Lake. It was incredibly helpful to step out of the law school bubble every once in a while and to get to know Austin!
