Law Students meet with State Senator Rodney Ellis, ’79, at the State Capitol
On Wednesday, February 22, 2012, students from the Law School’s Hargrave Society met with Senator Rodney Ellis, ’79, in the Betty King Committee Room at the State Capitol. Ellis serves as the Community Fellow for the Hargrave Society, which is one of the eight societies in the Law School’s Society Program. -

John Robertson’s essays on caregiving in cancer discussed in The New Republic
John A. Robertson, Vinson & Elkins Chair at the School of Law, contributed two essays to a collection on caregiving in cancer entitled, Malignant: Medical Ethicists Confront Cancer. The book was favorably reviewed in a recent issue of The New Republic. -

UT Law wins regional championship at ABA’s National Appellate Advocacy Competition
UT law students, competing among thirty-two teams in the American Bar Association’s annual National Appellate Advocacy Competition, won a regional championship, paving the way to vie for a national title in Chicago in April. The ABA’s moot court competition is the biggest in the nation, involving nearly two hundred teams from law schools across the nation. The Law School’s team will be one of twenty-four teams advancing. -

Law School to host events for children and teens as part of Explore UT, Saturday, March 3, 2012
On Saturday, March 3, 2012, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the University of Texas at Austin will host “the biggest open house in Texas”—Explore UT. This annual event is a hands-on introduction to the University to schoolchildren from kindergarten through high school through a variety of events, performances, lectures, exhibits, and other activities. As in past years, the Law School will host several events. -

On February 27, 2012, Robert Chesney, Charles I. Francis Professor in Law at the University of Texas School of Law, will deliver the Fifth Annual Waldemar A. Solf and Marc L. Warren Chair Lecture in International and Operational Law at the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School in Charlottesville, Virginia. -

Professor Barbara Bintliff to participate as legal information expert at Congressional conference
Barbara Bintliff, Joseph C. Hutcheson Professor in Law, at the University of Texas School of Law, will participate as a legal information expert at a conference for secretaries general from regional, national, and sub-national parliaments from around the world, “Achieving Greater Transparency in Legislatures through the Use of Open Document Standards.” The conference, sponsored by the United Nations, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and the U.S. House of Representatives, will be in Washington, D.C. on February 27–29, 2012, at the U.S. Congress. -

The Bernard and Audre Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice at the University of Texas School of Law is pleased to announce its eighth annual conference, “Property Rights and the Human Rights Agenda,” to take place March 1–2, 2012. This multidisciplinary and comparative conference will explore the ambivalent relationship between human rights and property and the extent to which the right to property might advance a human rights agenda. -

Reception will begin at 6:00 p.m., and Horton’s talk, “More Security, Less Democracy? Struggling to Maintain Democratic Voices in the National Security Debate” will follow at 6:30 p.m. -

On Monday, February 20, 2012, the Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice will host the first Human Rights Happy Hour of the Spring semester. Professor Jorge Contesse of the Universidad Diego Portales in Santiago, Chile, will present a talk entitled “Inter-American Constitutionalism: The Creation and Internalization of Human Rights.” The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 3:30 p.m.–5:30 p.m. in TNH 3.142 at the University of Texas School of Law.
