Justice Center announces 2011 Whitehurst Public Interest Summer Fellows
Six students at the University of Texas School of Law have been selected as the 2011 Whitehurst Public Interest Summer Fellows. The fellowships are made possible by a gift from Bill, ’70, and Stephanie Whitehurst, and are administered by the Law School’s William Wayne Justice Center for Public Interest Law. The fellowships are awarded annually to outstanding students between their second and third years of law school to support their summer public interest work. -

On Tuesday, April 5, 2011, the Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice and the Center for Global Energy, International Arbitration, and Environmental Law will host a Human Rights Happy Hour featuring Professor Judith Kimerling of the City University of New York, who will present a lecture entitled “Oil, Litigation and Conservation in the Amazon Rainforest in Ecuador: Can Cowode Law Protect the Rights of Indigenous Huaorani in the Oil Patch and Yasuni Biosphere Reserve?” -

Law School Alumni Association announces 2011 distinguished alumni award recipients
The University of Texas Law Alumni Association has announced the recipients of its 2011 distinguished alumni awards. Wayne A. Reaud received the Honorary Order of the Coif; The Honorable Sam Sparks, ’63, received the Lifetime Achievement Award; Ann Barnett Stern, ’82, received the Distinguished Alumnus Award for Community Service; and Thomas M. Susman, ’67, received the Outstanding Alumnus Award. -

UT Law student selected for Access to Justice Summer Internship Program
First-year UT Law student Adriana Bole has been selected to participate in the Access to Justice Summer Internship Program. Bole, one of only fourteen law students from around the United States selected for the program, will spend her summer internship with the Paso del Norte Civil Rights Project in El Paso. -

Linda Mullenix, the Morris & Rita Atlas Chair in Advocacy at the Law School, has written several articles analyzing Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. v. Dukes, which was argued before the United States Supreme Court on March 29, 2011. -

UT Law’s Students for the Arts cosponsors free legal clinic for local artists, March 31, 2011
Law Students for the Arts (LSfTA), a student group at the Law School, with support from Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts (TALA), will offer a free legal clinic for low-income artists on Thursday, March 31, 2011, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the offices of Fulbright & Jaworski LLP at 600 Congress Avenue, Suite 2400. -

The University of Texas School of Law and the Chicano/Hispanic Law Students’ Association (CHLSA) will celebrate the organization’s fortieth anniversary with a banquet that includes a keynote address by former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson on Saturday, March 26, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin. UT Law alumnus and prominent trial attorney Joseph D. Jamail Jr., ’52, will introduce Richardson at the sold-out event. -

Law School team wins national championship at Uvaldo Herrera National Moot Court Competition
The University of Texas School of Law interscholastic team won the national championship in the 2011 Uvaldo Herrera National Moot Court Competition. Team members Anthony Arguijo, ’11; Sergio Davila, ’11; and Omar Ochoa, ’11, beat Arizona State University in the final round of the competition to win the championship. The team also won the award for best respondent’s brief. -
